By Belize Live News Staff: The Department of Transport (DOT) has officially resumed national enforcement operations targeting motorcycle violations in Belize. This comes amid a rising tide of public complaints and an observed spike in breaches of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act.
Motorcycles, once viewed as a convenient and affordable mode of transportation, are now under scrutiny for contributing to excessive noise pollution and unsafe practices, especially in residential areas. Officials have noted a troubling trend: fewer riders wearing helmets, more instances of overloaded bikes, and a general disregard for traffic regulations.
In response, DOT, working alongside the Police Department and municipal traffic units, will conduct spot inspections to ensure motorcycles meet safety and legal standards for roadworthiness, noise levels, and operator conduct. Non-compliant motorcycles will be impounded and offenders penalized.
The DOT is urging all motorcycle owners and operators to ensure their vehicles are licensed, roadworthy, and used responsibly. Officials are also encouraging the public to report unsafe motorcycle activity to the police or call the DOT hotline at 613-3104.
