By Belize Live News Staff: Talk about bad timing—two residents of Ladyville were caught transporting over 8 kilograms of cannabis last night on a public bus packed with police officers.
The bust happened around 10:00 p.m. on Friday during a standard Orange Walk to Belize City bus run. When the bus made a stop to refuel at the Shell gas station on the Philip Goldson Highway, Police Constable Torres—who was among several officers onboard—noticed a strong aroma of marijuana.
His nose led him to a couple seated four rows behind the driver. They had two bags with them: a green handbag and a black school bag. When asked what they were carrying, the woman replied “nothing,” but a search quickly told a different story. Inside were eight transparent parcels filled with what appeared to be cannabis.
The suspects were taken into custody and transported to the police station, where they were identified as residents of Ocean Drive, Ladyville. The parcels were weighed in their presence and found to amount to just over 17 pounds.
Police say the couple will be charged with Possession of Controlled Drugs with Intent to Supply.
