By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has unveiled a new family of currency notes, marking a historic departure from its colonial past by removing the image of the British monarch for the first time. The new notes, which feature prominent national figures and symbols, were revealed at a formal event at the Civic Center in Belize City.
Prime Minister John Briceño said the redesign reflects the country’s cultural identity and independence. “Today, we honor Belize’s heritage and the transformative impact of our national heroes,” Briceño said at the launch. “Their values of hard work, peace, and justice are now symbolically embedded in our currency.”
The flagship notes feature George Price, known as the father of Belize’s independence, on the $100 bill, and Philip Goldson, a leader in Belize’s nationalist movement, on the $50 bill. The redesigned notes incorporate Belizean landscapes, national symbols, and vibrant colors, aiming to celebrate the country’s natural beauty and heritage.
“Color plays a critical role in differentiating denominations,” said Stuart Rost, the lead designer from Banknotes. The notes also include tactile features to assist visually impaired individuals. Gareth Evans of DeLaRue, the production company, highlighted the symbolic importance of the redesign. “These banknotes are more than currency; they reflect Belize’s pride and identity,” Evans said.
The Central Bank of Belize assured that the value of the Belize dollar remains unchanged. “The exchange rate of two Belize dollars to one U.S. dollar will remain stable,” said Central Bank Governor Kareem Michael. The notes also feature advanced security measures to prevent counterfeiting, officials said.
The new notes will go into circulation by mid-year, accompanied by a public awareness campaign. Authorities plan to educate citizens about the design and security features to ensure a smooth transition. This move comes as Belize seeks to reinforce its national identity amid record-breaking tourism numbers and ongoing economic recovery.
