By Belize Live News Staff: A growing garbage crisis in Belize City has left streets cluttered with trash, causing mounting frustration among residents. In areas such as Freedom Street in Port Loyola, garbage collection has reportedly been suspended for two weeks, with overflowing bins and unpleasant odors becoming the norm.
The Belize City Council’s ongoing financial challenges have been linked to the situation, as the Council owes Belize Waste Control over $800,000. The unpaid debt has brought garbage collection services to a halt for more than three weeks, worsening sanitation issues across the city.
Waste management disputes have plagued the city for years, as previous administrations also encountered difficulties in sustaining consistent garbage collection services. The current crisis points to underlying problems in waste management contracts and financial arrangements.
While officials have avoided commenting on potential legal actions against Belize Waste Control, the City Council has taken steps to clean public areas where possible. However, residential garbage collection remains outside the scope of the Council’s trucks, leaving many areas with uncollected waste.
