By Belize Live News Staff: If a major storm hits Belize, the people who respond need training that holds up under pressure. That is part of what took a Belizean delegation to Taiwan this month.
Minister of Public Service and Disaster Risk Management Henry Usher led the group during a visit from August 19 to 23.
Their itinerary was practical. They visited the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction in New Taipei City and the National Fire Agency Training Center in Nantou County, alongside institutions focused on civil servant training.
The delegation also took in the 2026 Taiwan Automation Intelligence and Robot Show in Taipei.
Taiwan is a country that deals with typhoons and earthquakes regularly, which makes its disaster preparedness systems relevant to a country that lives with hurricane season every year.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung told the delegation that Taiwan is encouraging its companies to invest in Belize and buy Belizean products, and highlighted the Taiwan Caribbean Academy set up with the University of Belize.
Usher thanked Taiwan for its long standing support in agriculture, education and infrastructure.
