DFC nominated for accreditation to adaptation fund

By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Economic Development has announced the nomination of the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) for accreditation to the Adaptation Fund (AF). This move, discussed during the World Bank/IMF annual meetings in October, represents a huge step in Belize’s efforts to enhance its climate resilience and support vulnerable communities.

The Adaptation Fund, established in 2001, provides crucial financial assistance to developing nations for climate adaptation projects. These initiatives aim to protect coastal areas, improve water management, boost food security, and prepare communities for extreme weather events.

Belize, ranked as one of the most climate-vulnerable nations by the IMF, faces substantial risks from natural disasters, with 43% of its population living in coastal regions. The DFC’s potential accreditation will enable the mobilization of grant funding for climate-resilient housing projects, safeguarding infrastructure and livelihoods.

The DFC is well-positioned to meet the Adaptation Fund’s stringent standards, ensuring transparency and accountability in its projects. This nomination highlights Belize’s commitment to combating climate change through innovative solutions and international collaboration.
