By Belize Live News Staff: A new $2 million water and wastewater treatment project is set to bring sustainable solutions to Northern Ambergris Caye. The initiative, launched in partnership between the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center and the Belize government, focuses on ensuring a steady supply of potable water and effective wastewater management for communities on the island.
Area Representative Andre Perez highlighted the importance of this project, not only for residents but also for Ambergris Caye’s vital tourism industry. “This project will enhance municipal water supply and integrate low-carbon, climate-resilient solutions,” Perez stated, emphasizing the benefits for both local livelihoods and the environment.
Dr. Colin Young, Executive Director of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center, explained that as Ambergris Caye grows, sustainable water use is critical to support its population and tourism. The new system will treat water to a standard safe for non-potable uses, allowing for greater water reuse and conservation.
