Government employee accused of stealing $5K from treasury funds

By Belize Live News Staff: A government cashier has been charged with theft after allegedly misappropriating $5,000 from the Treasury Department in Belize. The accused, 33-year-old Shamira Hope, a cashier from South Street, was arrested following an internal investigation.

The incident came to light when an assistant accountant general informed a finance officer that $5,000—comprising one hundred $50 bills—was missing from the cash pan during a routine check. Upon being confronted, Hope reportedly admitted to taking the money on September 25th, citing medical reasons for the unauthorized withdrawal.
