Guyanese diplomat Sir Shridath Ramphal passes, remembered for efforts in Belize-Guatemala territorial resolution

By Belize Live News Staff: Guyanese diplomat and former Commonwealth Secretary-General Sir Shridath “Sonny” Ramphal passed away on August 30th at the age of 95. Known for his diplomatic acumen and extensive international influence, Sir Ramphal made a notable mark as Belize’s facilitator in the historic Ramphal-Reichler proposals.

In 2002, Ramphal presented the proposals, aimed at settling the long-standing Belize-Guatemala territorial dispute. The proposals sought to reaffirm Belize’s borders as recognized in the 1859 treaty between the two nations. Additionally, Ramphal advocated for an ecological marine park that would include parts of Belize’s Cayes and the coastal areas of Guatemala and Honduras, highlighting cooperation in environmental preservation as a cornerstone of peace.

Despite the applause and controversy the proposals generated, they were ultimately rejected by Guatemala, leading the two countries to take their case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Sir Ramphal’s career extended far beyond this effort. He was renowned as a global statesman, respected by monarchs, prime ministers, and presidents alike. His legacy remains one of diplomacy, intellectual leadership, and a commitment to international peace.
