Hit and run at the speed bumps leaves SUV in the drain

Accident

By Belize Live News Staff: The indicator was on, the overtake was underway, and then the black car swerved. By the time it was over, a grey SUV sat in the drain at Punta Gorda Junction, and the other driver was gone down the road without so much as a brake light.

The Belize Police Department reports that officers responded to the accident at about 5:55 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, where they met the shaken but unhurt driver, a 46-year-old woman of Orange Walk Town.

Her account was straightforward. Driving her grey Nissan Murano from Punta Gorda Junction toward Bella Vista Village, she came up behind a black car at the stretch with the three speed bumps, signalled left, and moved to overtake. Mid-manoeuvre, she told police, the black car swerved into her, catching the SUV between the rear passenger door and bumper, and sending her out of control and into the right-side drain.

The black car never stopped, leaving her in the drain and police with a mystery vehicle to find.

The mercy of the evening is the injury count: zero. The frustration is everything else, a damaged SUV, an insurance headache, and a driver somewhere in the south whose black car carries the scrape marks of an accident they drove away from.

Police are actively investigating. Anyone who was near the Punta Gorda Junction speed bumps around 5:55 p.m. Friday, or who knows a black car that came home with unexplained damage this weekend, can help close this one. Contact the Independence police.

Leaving the scene never un-happens an accident. It just adds a second offence to the first.
