By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Network of NGOs is calling for stronger accountability measures in public office, including standardized procedures for temporarily removing officials who face serious criminal charges or allegations.
In a statement issued Monday, October 26, the organization warned that public confidence must be protected whenever individuals entrusted with government responsibilities become involved in serious legal controversies.
BNN said anyone serving in an official capacity and receiving compensation or benefits from taxpayers has a responsibility to uphold high standards of integrity.
The organization pointed to Section 121 of the Belize Constitution, which addresses conduct that could undermine confidence in the integrity of government.
BNN argued that temporary removal from official duties should be considered when serious criminal matters arise, pending their determination by the judiciary.
The organization made clear that such measures should not prejudge guilt or innocence.
Its statement specifically supported calls for Ambassador Alexis Rosado to step down from his position as Belize’s Co-Agent before the International Court of Justice.
The Government subsequently confirmed Rosado’s resignation, effective October 26, while emphasizing his right to the presumption of innocence.
Beyond Rosado’s case, BNN’s position raises a broader policy question about whether Belize should establish uniform standards governing public officials who face serious criminal allegations.
The organization maintained that accountability should not depend on an individual’s political connections, seniority or public responsibilities.
BNN concluded by reaffirming its commitment to promoting good governance, transparency and public trust in Belize.
