Village dog bite lands owner on police wanted list

By Belize Live News Staff: An evening walk through Cowpen Village ended with teeth in a woman’s leg, and now the dog’s owner has questions to answer at the Independence Police Station.

The Belize Police Department reports that a 37-year-old domestic of the Stann Creek District village came forward on Friday, July 24, 2026, reporting that the night before, at about 8:30 p.m., a black and brown dog charged at her on a village street and bit her left leg.

The dog, she told police, ran out from a nearby yard. And when she confronted the owner, telling him his animal had bitten her and that she needed help, his response, according to her report, was to refuse.

That refusal may prove costly. Police have recorded her statement, issued medico-legal forms, and listed a man as wanted in connection with the matter, under one of the more rarely seen lines in the law books: permitting an unmuzzled ferocious dog to be at large. Until he is located and charged, his name stays unpublished.

For every yard in Belize with a dog behind the fence, or worse, in front of it, the case carries a plain lesson. Your dog is your responsibility, on your property and off it. When it bites, the law comes looking for the hand that holds the leash, or should have been holding it.

The investigation continues, and the woman’s recovery, thankfully from a leg wound and not worse, is underway.
