Police clamp down on unlicensed and unsafe vehicles

By  Belize Live News Staff: Police conducted a joint vehicular checkpoint operation along the Placencia Main Road on Monday, January 19, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety in the tourist destination.

The operation took place between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and focused on reckless driving, unlicensed and uninsured vehicles, failure to wear seat belts, unsafe golf carts, unroadworthy motorcycles, defective vehicle equipment, and other traffic offences. Officers also remained vigilant for suspicious activity.

During the operation, police checked 85 private vehicles, 15 taxi vans and cars, 20 golf carts, 12 motorcycles, and 5 cargo trucks.

Police issued five traffic violation tickets for offences including operating unlicensed vehicles, failing to properly display license plates, defective tires, and failure to display insurance discs.

Authorities reported that the checkpoint was conducted peacefully and without incident.
