By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry is raising serious concerns over discussions surrounding a potential takeover in the telecommunications sector, warning that the move could negatively impact consumers, businesses, and the wider economy.
In a strongly worded statement, the chamber said any consolidation at this time would be premature and potentially harmful, given the absence of modern competition and merger-control laws in Belize. Business leaders warned that without strong safeguards, such a move could pave the way for monopolistic practices, higher prices, and reduced service quality.
The chamber also highlighted transparency concerns, stressing that the public deserves full disclosure and proper consultation before any major national asset is reshaped. It emphasized that telecom services are critical to economic growth and must be protected from decisions that could undermine competition.
As a result, the BCCI says it cannot support any move toward consolidation under the current conditions.
