Hurricane Beryl Strengthens: Belize in potential path as storm heads west

By Belize Live News Staff: As Hurricane Beryl intensifies in the Atlantic, Belizeans are being urged to prepare for potential impacts later this week. The first named hurricane of the season, Beryl is expected to bring a dangerous mix of high winds, storm surge, and heavy rainfall to the Windward Islands in the eastern Caribbean before potentially tracking towards the western Caribbean Sea, where Belize lies.

Forecasters are closely monitoring the storm’s path, which remains uncertain. While the initial impact will be felt in the eastern Caribbean, there is a growing possibility that Beryl could threaten Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Belize, and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula later in the week.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) is actively tracking the storm and coordinating preparedness efforts. NEMO is advising residents to review their emergency plans, stock up on essential supplies, and secure their homes and properties. Those living in low-lying or coastal areas should be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

Hurricane Beryl is a reminder that the 2024 hurricane season, which officially began on June 1st, could be an active one. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted an above-average season with the possibility of up to 25 named storms.

While Belize has been fortunate to avoid major hurricane impacts in recent years, it is essential to remain vigilant and prepared. Hurricane Beryl serves as a wake-up call for all Belizeans to take the necessary steps to ensure their safety and the security of their loved ones.
