Belize on alert as new world screwworm detected in Northern Mexico

By Belize Live News Staff: Belizean officials are closely monitoring developments after Mexico confirmed a new case of New World screwworm (NWS) in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León, less than 70 miles from the U.S.–Mexico border.

The confirmation by Mexico’s National Service of Agro-Alimentary Health, Safety, and Quality (SENASICA) marks the northernmost detection of NWS since the current outbreak began. While the United States has already closed its ports to imports of cattle, bison, and horses from Mexico, the news has implications for Belize as well, given the movement of livestock across the region.

NWS is a dangerous pest affecting livestock and other warm-blooded animals, including humans. The fly’s larvae infest open wounds, feeding on living tissue and often leading to severe injury or death if left untreated. Belize, with its strong cattle industry and rural livestock production, faces potential risk if the pest spreads further through Central America.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has rolled out a sweeping five-pronged plan to protect American borders and eradicate the pest, including sterile fly releases, surveillance, and strict controls on livestock movement. Belize, though not mentioned directly in the U.S. response, will need to remain vigilant, especially as outbreaks have been recorded further south in Mexico earlier this year.

Belize’s Ministry of Agriculture and animal health officials already cooperate with regional partners in surveillance programs to prevent the reintroduction of pests like NWS. The country has historical experience with screwworm infestations before its eradication campaign succeeded decades ago. Any resurgence could have devastating consequences for local farmers and food security.

Officials urge Belizean livestock owners to regularly check animals for unusual wounds or maggot infestations and to report any suspicious cases immediately. Public awareness is also crucial, as the pest can occasionally affect people.
