By Belize Live News Staff: A United States initiative to classify Belize as a “Safe Third Country” has set off fresh discussions about migration and foreign policy.
The agreement, if ever signed, would mean asylum seekers heading to the United States could be diverted to Belize to pursue their claims. Prime Minister John Briceño has acknowledged that his administration is in the middle of reviewing the idea but emphasized that no decision has been taken.
According to Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca, the US proposal is still in the vetting stage. Drafts are being analyzed by the Attorney General’s Ministry, and Cabinet will only consider it once the Prime Minister sees fit.
While officials highlight that the US has not pressured Belize, the suggestion has already caught the attention of human rights advocates, political commentators, and the wider public. Questions are being asked about Belize’s capacity to absorb asylum seekers and the long-term impact such a move could have on local communities.
For now, the government insists consultations will continue before any step forward is taken.
