Police under fire after man beaten in chokehold at Hattieville checkpoint

By Belize Live News Staff: Police officers are facing heavy scrutiny after being caught on camera punching a man who had already been subdued at the Hattieville checkpoint early Saturday morning. The incident reportedly occurred around 6:40 a.m.

According to footage captured by a passing motorist, four officers believed to be from the Quick Response Team (QRT) and Special Branch were seen detaining a single male. One officer restrained the man in a chokehold while another repeatedly punched him as he lay subdued.

Despite the repeated blows, the detained man remained conscious and was later taken into custody. The reason for his detention remains unclear at this time, raising further questions about the officers’ use of force.

The video has since sparked outrage, with concerns mounting over police conduct and accountability in such incidents.
