Belize Government to pay $300,000 over inmate’s death in custody

By Belize Live News Staff: The High Court has ordered the Government of Belize to pay $300,000 in damages to the family of Jahangir Rahman Mahdi Abadi, a 70-year-old inmate who died in 2019 while in custody at Belize Central Prison.

Abadi, who suffered from serious health conditions including diabetes and kidney disease, was found to have received inadequate medical care. The court ruled that the prison authorities failed in their duty of care by not providing necessary treatment or regular doctor visits.

The judge dismissed arguments that Abadi’s own actions contributed to his death, stating the evidence pointed to a lack of proper medical intervention. The ruling confirms the government’s liability for wrongful death under the Torts Act.
