By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Airports Authority (BAA) has formally cancelled two security contracts that recently came under public scrutiny. However, concerns remain over more than $1 million reportedly disbursed prior to the termination of those agreements.
In a release issued Friday, the BAA stated it signed deeds of release with Bau Group Security and ISecurity Limited. According to the release, this agreement “formally concludes all prior contractual obligations” between the BAA and the two companies. The BAA also assured the public that airport operations would continue seamlessly under “new arrangements.”
The release, however, did not mention the payments already made under the now-cancelled contracts. Based on best available information, more than $1 million may have already been paid, despite services reportedly beginning only in May.
This has prompted public concern and a series of unanswered questions: Will the funds be recovered? Were the contracts lawfully executed? If issues are found in the award process, will any accountability follow?
The BAA indicated that an internal investigation is ongoing into the tendering process that led to the contracts. It also stated that the resolution comes at no cost to the Authority. However, the lack of clarity on whether previously disbursed funds will be returned has raised further questions about the outcome and transparency of the process.
There is also no word yet on who the new security providers are or what qualifications they bring to the table, adding to public interest and scrutiny.
Belize Live News will continue following this developing story and providing updates as more information becomes available.
