Transport CEO responds as bus shutdown looms

By Belize Live News Staff: With buses set to stop rolling on Monday, the Ministry of Transport says the decision is not its own to make.

CEO Chester Williams told 7 News in a Zoom interview late Thursday that the Belize Bus Association’s demands will go before Cabinet.

“Our ministry will be tabling a cabinet paper at the next cabinet meeting, at which time the cabinet is going to deliberate on that matter,” he said.

Williams also said he replied to the association’s letter on Thursday afternoon, setting out the ministry’s position.

The association had written to the ministry on July 15 asking for a way forward on the expired fuel subsidy and says it never got a response. It then wrote to the Prime Minister on August 5.

Pressed on that gap by 7 News, Williams returned to the same answer, that he had replied that afternoon and explained the position.

The subsidy came out of April’s road block at the Tower Hill Bridge and ran out on August 4.

The BBA says it will hold a press briefing next week.

Will the buses actually stop on Monday?
