By Belize Live News Staff: Melquir Antonio Westby, a 37 year old labourer from Palmar Village, lost his life in the early hours of Friday morning on a stretch of road he was likely familiar with.
Police say Westby was riding along San Estevan Road from Orange Walk Town toward the bypass around 12:15am when he reached the San Estevan roundabout and collided with it.
He was thrown from his motorcycle and landed on the grass. The bike came to rest about 28 feet away, on its left side, with a bent handlebar and a broken mirror.
Police arrived around 12:30am and found him motionless with serious head and leg injuries.
He was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:40am.
Records show Westby was properly licensed to ride and the motorcycle was both licensed and insured.
The motorcycle is now at the Orange Walk Police Station awaiting inspection, and a postmortem is pending.
