By Belize Live News Staff: The United Democratic Party wants the latest electricity rate increase reversed, and it is framing the demand around a single question.
In a release issued Friday, the party pointed to the close to $400 million of public money that has gone into electricity infrastructure acquisitions, then to the 1.5 cents per kilowatt hour that customers are now being asked to pay on top.
“Where is the benefit to the consumer?” the statement asks.
The party says this is the second rate increase in seven months, coming after one in January, and lands on households already stretched by the cost of food, rent and transportation.
It also says Belizeans across the country are complaining about sharp spikes in their bills, with many unable to explain the jump given that their consumption has not changed.
The UDP is calling on the Government and the PUC to roll back the increase, explain what the $400 million has delivered, address the complaints, and put consumers first.
“The UDP stands with Belizean consumers and demands action,” the release concludes.
