By Belize Live News Staff: As public attention increasingly focuses on government spending, procurement practices, and contract awards, Belize Water Services Limited has stepped forward to clarify its role in several projects that have recently been the subject of public discussion.
In a statement released this week, BWSL sought to distance itself from claims linking the company to a number of rural water infrastructure projects, including works in Sarteneja, Hopkins, and Santa Familia.
According to the utility, those projects do not fall under its responsibility and are not managed or procured by BWSL.
The clarification highlights a broader issue facing Belize: the growing demand for transparency and accurate information regarding public infrastructure spending.
In recent weeks, public debate has intensified over how contracts are awarded, who benefits from them, and whether procurement systems are functioning as intended.
BWSL also addressed questions surrounding FAST Construction Ltd., stating that the company received only one BWSL contract, the San Ignacio River Gallery Project, valued at approximately BZ$1.4 million.
Importantly, the utility emphasized that the contract was awarded through a bidding process overseen by international lending institutions, including the Inter-American Development Bank, Caribbean Development Bank, and World Bank.
Those organizations require strict procurement standards designed to promote fairness, competition, and accountability.
The statement serves as a reminder that in an era of heightened public scrutiny, institutions are increasingly being called upon to provide detailed explanations about their operations and procurement decisions.
Whether the clarification settles the debate remains to be seen, but it underscores the growing importance of transparency as Belizeans continue demanding greater accountability in the management of public resources.
