Three major cave sites remain closed due to high river levels

By Belize Live News Staff: The Institute of Archaeology (IA) has advised that three major cave sites — Nohoch Che’en, Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), and Barton Creek — remain closed due to elevated river conditions.

The advisory was issued at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, December 15, 2025, as weather conditions continue to impact river levels across parts of the country. The IA stated that the closures are necessary to ensure the safety of visitors, tour guides, and tour operators.

All other archaeological reserves remain open to the public at this time.

Tour operators and licensed tour guides are being strongly advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions and to exercise extra caution, particularly during water-based activities.

The Institute of Archaeology says it will continue to closely monitor conditions and will provide updates as necessary.
