By Belize Live News Staff: The shooting death of a common-law husband following a domestic dispute has rocked Belmopan, and the woman charged in the case has just been granted bail.
Christy Guzman, 21, was released from custody on Friday after Justice Nigel Pilgrim granted her a $9,000 bail bond. Guzman is facing a charge of manslaughter by negligence for the death of her aunt’s partner, Wilson Hernandez.
Guzman had been on remand for nearly a month following the fatal confrontation. Her release is conditional and strictly monitored: she must report to Belmopan Police twice a week, must not have any contact with the deceased’s family, and has been ordered to hand over all travel documents.
The case has drawn significant public attention, not just due to the family link, but because of the firearm involved. Investigators confirmed the weapon used in the shooting was a licensed gun reportedly owned by Guzman’s aunt, Dalia Vellos, who lived with the deceased, Hernandez.
Controversially, Vellos has not been charged, despite the weapon being registered in her name. Police sources indicate the investigation into the sequence of events during the domestic dispute is ongoing.
Guzman was represented by Attorney Hurl Hamilton. She is scheduled to return to court on November 7th for the next hearing in the case.
