By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño is holding his ground as pressure mounts over allegations that police officers may have been involved in the abduction of Joseph Budna in Orange Walk. Speaking from the Belize Investment Summit in San Pedro, the Prime Minister made it clear—no decision will be taken until he has the official police report in hand.
“I asked Minister Kareem Musa for that report today. By tomorrow at the very latest, I expect to see it. Then we’ll decide whether there’s a need for an independent investigation,” Briceño told reporters. “This government has absolutely nothing to do with that incident. If an independent probe is necessary, we’ll do it.”
Reporters pressed Briceño on leaked video footage suggesting police involvement, but the PM maintained he had not seen it. “I haven’t had a chance to look at any video. I’ve been busy since yesterday. Once I get the report, then we’ll know the way forward,” he said.
When asked about releasing surveillance footage for transparency, Briceño pushed back. “How can you do that if they’re the ones doing the investigation? Let’s get the report first. Hold on, relax.”
Despite mounting calls for answers, the Prime Minister stressed that his government would not shield anyone if wrongdoing is proven. “If there’s evidence, it will come to light. But let’s allow the process to work.”
For now, Belize waits for that report—one that could determine whether this case stays in the hands of police or moves to an independent investigation.
