Police officer from San Roman Village killed in Friday night crash

By Belize Live News Staff: An arrest has been made following a fatal road traffic accident that left a Belizean police officer dead along the highway between miles 30 and 31.

The deadly crash happened on Friday night, January 30th, 2026, at approximately 7:25 p.m., and claimed the life of Marcos Acal, 48, a Police Special Constable from San Roman Village, Stann Creek District.

Police on Saturday arrested and charged Juan Carlos Estrada Prado, 30, a Guatemalan national from Santa Cruz Village, Guatemala, in relation to the incident.

Authorities say the accused faces multiple charges including manslaughter by negligence and causing death by careless conduct, along with traffic offences for allegedly driving without due care, failing to report the accident, and failing to stop and render aid.

Estrada Prado was again cautioned after being served with the charge sheet and reportedly chose to remain silent. He was remanded in custody and is due back in court on Monday, February 2nd, 2026.
