By Belize Live News Staff: Orson “OJ” Elrington, a well-known Belizean attorney, is set to face trial in September on a rape charge following a case management session held earlier this week in the Supreme Court. The 43-year-old is accused of raping a woman in a case that will proceed without a jury before Justice Nigel Pilgrim.
Elrington has assembled a legal team that includes prominent attorneys: his father Hubert Elrington, Norman Rodriguez, Michelle Trapp, and Alfred Elrington. The prosecution is being led by Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl-Lynn Vidal.
At the recent hearing, the defense voiced concerns over certain pieces of evidence, describing them as hearsay. They informed the court that formal objections would be filed by July 18. Notably, Elrington is not presenting an alibi and instead argues that if any encounter occurred with the complainant, it was consensual.
The court could hear up to 12 witnesses during the proceedings, including individuals for the defense. The full list of witnesses is expected to be finalized by the next case management hearing on September 19. A specific trial date has yet to be announced.
