By Belize Live News Staff: The nation’s utility unions have stepped into the growing dispute between the Government of Belize and the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU), issuing a joint press release today calling for immediate and equitable action.
In their statement, the utility unions expressed “grave concern” over what they described as “prolonged salary stagnation amidst rising inflation” and criticized what they see as systemic disparities between high-ranking public servants and those at the grassroots level—particularly teachers. The unions say these disparities are forcing educators into the streets to demand long-overdue justice.
“This state of affairs contradicts the promises made to the Belizean electorate during successive political campaigns,” the statement read, adding that it “undermines the principle of equity in governance.”
The utility unions, which represent workers in critical national sectors such as water, power, and telecommunications, emphasized that any improvement in teachers’ compensation should be viewed not as a cost, but as a sound public investment. According to the release, better pay for teachers will not only strengthen the education system but will also contribute to economic growth and government revenue through increased productivity and taxation.
“We affirm the pivotal role that teachers play in the development of our society,” the unions stated. “They must be adequately and fairly compensated for their labor.”
The unions are now calling on all stakeholders—including the Government of Belize—to resume negotiations in good faith and reach an equitable resolution without further delay. The statement concluded with a strong reminder that the outcome of this dispute is deeply tied to the quality of education received by the nation’s children.
As tensions rise and support for the BNTU grows among other unions, the call for justice in the public sector appears to be gaining traction across Belize’s workforce.
BLN will continue to follow the situation and provide updates as they unfold.
