By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has recorded its first measles cases in over three decades, prompting swift action by the Ministry of Health & Wellness (MOHW) to prevent further spread. The confirmed cases, located in Corozal and Cayo, were traced to a group that recently traveled to Mexico—one of many regions experiencing a spike in measles outbreaks.
The individuals began showing symptoms shortly after returning to Belize on March 31. Testing confirmed the infection in two persons, both of whom exhibited classic signs: fever, rash, and flu-like symptoms. They, along with the rest of the travel group, are now in isolation.
The MOHW is urging the public to remain vigilant and to check vaccination records, particularly for children. The MMR vaccine is available across the country, and health officials are encouraging all unvaccinated individuals—regardless of age—to come forward.
Global health experts have warned of a sharp rise in measles due to declining immunization rates worldwide. Belize had been measles-free since 1991, but with international travel resuming post-pandemic, the threat of reintroduction has increased.
MOHW officials are preparing for a press briefing to address concerns and outline next steps. In the meantime, the public is advised to monitor for fever and rash symptoms and to report any suspected cases immediately.
