By Belize Live News Staff: A 28-year-old American man has been charged with manslaughter by negligence following the tragic death of a U.S. tourist while snorkeling off the coast of Belize.
Spenser Eisenberg, a resident of Caye Caulker, was formally charged after 70-year-old Jeffery Le Beau was fatally struck by a boat near Turneffe Atoll. The incident occurred in a designated dive zone that was clearly marked with caution buoys by a local tour company.
According to reports, Le Beau was enjoying a snorkeling excursion with his family when Eisenberg’s boat allegedly entered the restricted area at high speed and struck him. Several witnesses, including Le Beau’s two sons, were present when the tragedy unfolded.
Le Beau, a grandfather and respected former defense lawyer from the U.S., was remembered for his extensive legal work in manslaughter defense and his deep passion for the ocean. His professional website described him as an “avid waterman.”
Police say the investigation is ongoing and have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges.
