Belizean patients receive financial relief as Government cancels KHMH debts

By Belize Live News Staff: Thousands of Belizeans burdened with unpaid medical bills at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) can now breathe easier as the government has approved a $54 million debt write-off.

Announced during Friday’s parliamentary session, Health and Wellness Minister Kevin Bernard stated that the debt cancellation covers unpaid hospital fees from March 2009 to April 2022, including debts accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We committed in Plan Belize to making healthcare accessible and equitable,” Bernard said. “This is a decision made in the best interest of our people and our country.”

The move provides much-needed relief to Belizeans who faced financial hardship due to medical expenses. The government has not yet detailed how it will compensate for the loss of revenue to KHMH, but officials emphasize that this step is part of a broader effort to strengthen Belize’s healthcare system.
