Cayo teachers send students home as frustration over salary grows

By Belize Live News Staff: Teachers in Cayo took decisive action on Friday as those at St. Andrew’s Anglican School sent students home in protest over unpaid salary increments. Reports indicate that while some schools under the same management received their payments, others, including St. Andrew’s, were left without. Frustrated by the delays and lack of resolution, teachers decided to send students home, signaling their discontent.

The situation is part of a larger issue affecting over 600 teachers across Belize, as noted in a memo issued by the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU). The union has condemned the prolonged delays in salary increments and allowances, urging its members to stand in solidarity and demand immediate action.

As tensions mount, the BNTU has called for a nationwide protest rally scheduled for Friday, February 7, 2025, at the UB Gymnasium in Belmopan. The demonstration is set to run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., allowing teachers from across the country to voice their dissatisfaction publicly.

Adding further weight to the matter, a House Meeting has also been scheduled for the same date, raising speculation that teachers may use the opportunity to amplify their demands in front of government officials.

The protest highlights growing frustration among educators, who argue that they cannot continue working under conditions where their financial concerns are disregarded. With tensions running high, the focus now shifts to whether authorities will respond to the teachers’ grievances before the nationwide rally.

Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops.
