By Belize Live News Staff: With the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) often making headlines for internal disputes, Party Leader Shyne Barrow sought to change the narrative by steering the conversation toward national issues at a press conference held on Tuesday.
Barrow, who recently announced his own slate of candidates for key constituencies, including Albert, Queen Square, and Collet, did not center the event on party conflicts. Instead, he highlighted pressing national concerns such as education, healthcare, home affairs, transport, and sports.
Despite invitations being sent out for a politically charged event, only Barrow and a handful of UDP members, including new candidates Dr. Nelma Jones Mortis and Carlos Perrera, took the stage. Notably absent was Deputy Party Leader Hugo Patt, despite his name being featured in promotional materials.
While Barrow has previously held solo press briefings, this event was framed as an attempt to unify the UDP ahead of the general elections. Addressing the party’s internal strife, Barrow expressed disappointment that the media focuses on UDP infighting rather than the national issues he has consistently raised.
“The only thing that makes television are the sensational internal things,” Barrow remarked, emphasizing his efforts to present the UDP as a viable alternative to the ruling PUP.
The conference may have been a step toward shifting public perception, but whether it restored confidence in the electorate remains to be seen. As the UDP prepares for upcoming elections, Barrow and his team will need to prove their ability to unite and lead effectively.
