By Belize Live News Staff: UDP Shadow Minister for Transport and Sports, Alberto August, has criticized the PUP government’s handling of vehicle licenses, public transport, and sports facilities, calling out Minister Rodwell Ferguson for mismanagement.
Speaking at a press conference on Tueday, August condemned the prolonged unavailability of vehicle licenses, stickers, and driver’s licenses, labeling it a first-time failure in Belize’s history. He reminded the public that the minister had promised the issue would be resolved by September 2024, yet the problem persists into 2025.
“When that failed, the Prime Minister himself stepped in and assured the public the matter would be fixed by the end of the year. We are now in January, and the nation is still waiting,” August remarked.
August also criticized the state of sports facilities, particularly the Mexico Sports Center, which he claimed was in poor condition despite the Prime Minister’s frequent visits to Mexico. He referenced a recent visit by Cristobal Marte, president of the International Volleyball Association, who was reportedly disappointed with Belize’s sports infrastructure.
“If you’re going to Mexico so often, why not ask the Mexicans to help refurbish the Mexico Sports Center?” August questioned, implying a lack of government accountability in sports development.
The UDP’s focus on transportation and sports is part of a broader strategy to highlight governance failures ahead of the next general election.
