By Belize Live News Staff: A staffing shortage at the Philip Goldson International Airport caused significant delays on Monday after multiple immigration officers staged a sick-out, leaving only one officer on duty to process outgoing passengers.
The incident, which caused long lines in the departure area, is believed to stem from dissatisfaction with recent changes in immigration leadership. Earlier this month, Dalia Mai assumed command of immigration at PGIA, replacing retired head George Reynolds. Reports indicate that the transition has introduced new policies aimed at limiting improper practices within the department, sparking unrest among some officers.
Passengers were left frustrated as they waited to be processed, with many describing the scene as disorganized and chaotic. Officials have yet to comment on the situation or outline measures to address the staffing crisis.
As tensions simmer within the immigration department, travelers are urged to plan ahead to avoid further disruptions. Investigations into the sick-out and its implications are ongoing, and authorities are expected to respond in the coming days.
