By Belize Live News Staff: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams confirmed that, despite ongoing factional tensions within the United Democratic Party (UDP), Shyne Barrow is constitutionally recognized as the leader of the opposition. Speaking on the issue, Commissioner Williams underscored the police department’s neutral stance, emphasizing that they are not here to take sides in political disputes.
“We will hold forth and be as neutral as we can. Shyne is the constitutionally elected leader of the opposition,” Williams stated. He acknowledged that not everyone may agree with Shyne’s leadership, but clarified that, by law, he holds the position.
The Commissioner also pointed out the need for efficient use of police resources, highlighting that the department cannot afford to be “tied up in a love triangle.” He stated, “We cannot have this matter prolonged too much because the police have things to do.” Williams urged that any unresolved issues be brought to court for a fair decision, reinforcing that the police will not force anyone out and aim to remain impartial.
