By Belize Live News Staff: On Sunday, October 20th, 2024, a significant step was taken for marine conservation in Southern Belize. The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) and the University of Belize (UB) formalized their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration aims to promote education and conservation efforts focused on the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve (SCMR), located in Southern Belize.
The signing ceremony was part of UB’s luncheon event at Grace’s Restaurant in Punta Gorda Town, celebrating the university’s recent commencement exercises. Representing TIDE, Acting Executive Director Mr. Leonardo Chavarria Jr. signed the MoU, while Dr. Vincent Palacio, President of UB, signed on behalf of the university.
The partnership’s primary goal is to revitalize and operationalize UB’s field station on Hunting Caye, focusing on research, education, tourism, and environmental conservation. By leveraging the strengths of both institutions, this collaboration will lead to the enhancement of marine conservation efforts while also supporting educational initiatives in Southern Belize.
The MoU sets the stage for future projects, fostering a shared commitment to preserving the country’s natural marine resources for future generations.
