By Belize Live News Staff: Belizeans are preparing for the arrival of Tropical Storm Nadine, the fifteenth named storm of the 2024 hurricane season. The storm is expected to make landfall later today, bringing significant rainfall and the risk of flash flooding across parts of the country. As of early this morning, Nadine is moving westward at 8 mph, with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph and higher gusts. Forecasters are predicting some additional strengthening before the storm reaches land.
Residents are urged to brace for heavy rain, with expected totals of up to 8 inches and isolated areas possibly seeing as much as 12 inches by Tuesday. The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has issued alerts for coastal and flood-prone areas, advising locals to monitor updates and prepare for potentially dangerous conditions.
Tropical Storm Nadine is projected to impact not only Belize but also parts of southern Mexico and Guatemala. While Belize is expected to bear the brunt of the storm’s effects, surrounding regions are also likely to experience heavy rain and flooding over the weekend.
In other developments, the National Hurricane Center is also tracking Invest AL94, a system currently moving through the Atlantic. Though it is not an immediate threat to Belize, there is a 30% chance it could develop into a tropical depression or storm over the next 2 to 7 days. However, strong upper-level winds are expected to limit its formation potential.
NEMO is urging residents to remain vigilant, particularly in areas prone to flooding, and to have emergency plans in place. Updates will continue to be issued throughout the day as Nadine approaches Belize’s coastline.
