Prime Minister Briceño calls voter registration fraud a ‘Can of Worms’ amid legal challenge

PM Briceno criticizes lack of anthem singing, calls for national pride

By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño has acknowledged that alleged voter registration fraud is a deeply rooted issue that neither major political party is eager to fully expose. His remarks come after Magistrate Kara Wolters allowed the High Court to review challenges regarding the transfer of more than 100 voters to the Cayo North electoral division during the July-August period.

Concerns about possible fraud were first raised by UDP Cayo North standard bearer and former area representative Dr. Omar Figueroa. During the investigation, the San Ignacio Magistrate conducted site visits to verify some of the addresses listed for voters.

Prime Minister Briceño highlighted the issue by pointing to two of his political opponents, accusing them of using their offices to register voters. He specifically mentioned Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow, and Albert area representative Tracy Panton. Briceño suggested that Barrow registered himself at his office address, while Panton allegedly had over 80 voters registered at hers.

In response, Panton clarified that her office building also includes apartments, and the registrations took place over several periods. She also emphasized the need for electoral law reform, noting that both major parties have been involved in violations.

The case is now set to be reviewed by the High Court, as the issue of voter registration fraud continues to spark debate.
