By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize City Council’s new electric bus fleet has faced unexpected challenges just two months after its launch. In separate incidents occurring within 48 hours, two buses were damaged, highlighting concerns about public safety and respect for public property.
The first incident, which occurred last Thursday, involved an unemployed man who allegedly stoned a bus on Youth for the Future Drive, shattering a rear passenger window.
A second, more serious incident unfolded on Saturday when a security guard, 27-year-old Bernard Humes, allegedly struck a bus with a baton, damaging one of its doors. This altercation reportedly stemmed from a road rage incident near the Princess Hotel & Casino. The damaged bus was temporarily out of service, disrupting public transportation.
Humes appeared in court today and pleaded guilty to causing damage to property. He claimed the incident was accidental, stating he was trying to get the bus driver’s attention after a near-collision. Despite his willingness to pay for the damages, Magistrate could not order compensation exceeding $1,000. The prosecutor chose not to pursue compensation within the criminal proceedings.
Humes was fined $700 plus court costs, payable by December 31st, or he faces six months imprisonment.
The Belize City Council has yet to issue a statement on these incidents.
