At UN Summit, Belize PM calls for global action on climate crisis

By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño addressed world leaders at the United Nations Summit of the Future, calling for urgent action on climate change, as part of a series of high-level meetings during the UN General Assembly.

Briceño emphasized the global climate crisis, pointing to the disproportionate impact on small island developing states like Belize. He highlighted the need for more inclusive decision-making processes in international climate policy, arguing that current efforts have fallen short.

“The world faces a triple crisis: planetary, development, and climate,” Briceño stated. “Human and planetary capacities are approaching limits from which there may be no recovery. Despite the growing distance between our goals and their achievement, there has been no effective global response.”

He also stressed that countries like Belize, which are on the front lines of climate change, often lack meaningful representation in key global decisions. Briceño warned that symbolic gestures are not enough to address the profound implications of climate change on the future of vulnerable nations.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to return to Belize on September 27, with Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde serving as acting Prime Minister during his absence.
