By Belize Live News Staff: In a message delivered ahead of Belize’s Independence Day, Prime Minister John Briceño affirmed that the nation is stronger, more hopeful, and productive than at any other point in its 43-year history.
According to Briceño, employment is thriving, with 97 out of every 100 Belizeans working, as reported in the April 2024 Labour Force Survey. Economic output has risen 34 percent since the pandemic, while inflation has subsided, public finances have stabilized, and national debt is under control.
Foreign direct investment is also seeing significant growth, expected to surpass 2023 levels by 20 percent. But it’s not just big businesses benefiting. The Prime Minister pointed to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), along with emerging sectors such as business process outsourcing, which have prospered thanks to supportive legislation.
In addition, the government’s latest Economic Empowerment Program will provide new entrepreneurs with grants, training, and targeted support for industries within the blue, green, and orange economies.
Briceño also revealed a significant relief for homeowners and small farmers: the removal of stamp duties on mortgages valued below 100 thousand dollars. This initiative aims to enhance access to property ownership and agricultural growth.
