By Belize Live News Staff: A five-month-old baby girl’s diagnosis of congenital cataracts has plunged a Punta Gorda family into a desperate fight to save her vision. Sherae Mendez, blind since birth, faces an agonizing wait for surgery in Belize, prompting her parents to consider options in Mexico and appeal to the community for financial aid.
“We are overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty,” shared Shenae’s mother, also named Shenae Mendez. “The thought of Sherae losing her vision permanently is unbearable. We are exhausting all avenues to ensure she receives the treatment she desperately needs.”
The family has been informed that the wait for cataract surgery at the Belize Visual Impaired Center could stretch until July 2025. This delay has intensified their search for alternatives, including traveling to Merida, Mexico for potential treatment.
In a bid to raise the necessary funds for travel, medical procedures, and accommodations, the family is reaching out to friends, family, and the wider community. They are hopeful that someone may have faced a similar situation and can offer guidance or support.
“Any contribution, no matter how small, would be immensely helpful in our efforts to give Sherae a chance to see,” pleaded Ms. Mendez. “We are deeply grateful for any assistance and appreciate the community’s compassion and support during this challenging time.”
The family has provided their Belize Bank account number for those wishing to donate: 189632010220000 in the name of Shenae Mendez. They can also be reached at 615-2760 for further information or assistance.
Let’s come together as a community to help baby Sherae see the world!
