By Belize Live News Staff: The United Democratic Party (U.D.P.) appeared at the Belize City Magistrates Court on Tuesday to contest over sixty voter transfers in the Cayo North constituency.
U.D.P. Chairman Michael Peyrefitte raised concerns over one case where 15 individuals were registered at a single-bedroom apartment.
Peyrefitte suggested that many of these transfers originated from the Belize Rural Central constituency, raising potential red flags for the Area Representative, Dolores Balderamos-Garcia.
He further criticized Cayo North’s Area Representative Michel Chebat, describing the transfers as a “desperate tactic.” Despite their objections, the U.D.P.’s legal challenge was ultimately unsuccessful.
Peyrefitte explained that voter transfers are permitted during the months of July and August, but they must still follow a reasonable process.
He pointed out that one of the questionable cases involved an individual testifying that a small apartment with limited space had supposedly accommodated 15 new residents within a span of just one month.
Peyrefitte argued that while the law does not explicitly limit how many people can be registered at a single address, such claims stretch credibility.
He expressed frustration over the court’s decision to dismiss the case before hearing the defense, believing the U.D.P. deserved the opportunity to present more evidence.
