Jamaica's Dr. Chantal Ononaiwu appointed to Caribbean Court of Justice

By Belize Live News Staff: The Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission (RJLSC) has selected Dr. Chantal Ononaiwu, a distinguished Jamaican attorney, to fill the vacant seat on the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ). Dr. Ononaiwu, who boasts over two decades of legal experience, will replace Mr. Justice Jacob Wit, who retired in December 2023 and sadly passed away in January 2024.

Dr. Ononaiwu brings a wealth of expertise to the CCJ, specializing in Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Law, International Law, and International Trade Law. Her impressive career spans roles as an adjudicator, litigator, legal advisor, and university lecturer. Additionally, she has held significant positions in the international business and financial services sector and served as the Director of External Trade for CARICOM, where she advised member states on trade and investment matters.

Justice Adrian Saunders, Chairman of the RJLSC and President of the CCJ, praised the rigorous selection process, emphasizing its focus on merit, experience, and independence. The RJLSC received applications from a diverse pool of candidates across the globe, ultimately shortlisting four individuals for in-person interviews in Port of Spain.

Dr. Ononaiwu is expected to assume her new role in October 2024. The RJLSC is actively seeking additional appointments to the CCJ bench, including a successor for Justice Saunders, who plans to retire in 2025.
