By Belize Live News Staff: In a departure from the usual narrative, where economic aid predominantly targets women, the governments of Belize and Taiwan have joined forces to extend an empowerment project to include men and boys. This groundbreaking initiative seeks to address domestic challenges and reduce gender-based violence by providing economic opportunities and fostering positive change.
The project, an extension of the successful Women Empowerment Project, was spearheaded by Belize’s Special Envoy for Women and Children, Rossana Briceño. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive approach to empowerment, Briceño sought the assistance of the Taiwanese Embassy, which readily provided funding, showcasing Taiwan’s dedication to Belize’s social development.
The primary objective of the project is to offer economic opportunities to men and boys, aiming to uplift their lives and contribute to a more harmonious domestic environment. It also emphasizes the importance of changing mindsets and reaching boys at an early age to prevent the perpetuation of harmful attitudes and beliefs.
Taiwan’s Ambassador to Belize, Lily Li-Wen Hsu, highlighted the severity of violence against women in Belize and the strategic importance of engaging men and boys to address this issue at its root. The existing Women Empowerment Project has already empowered over 700 women across Belize, and this expansion is expected to reach 600 young men.
Amalia Mai, CEO of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, applauded the initiative’s inclusive approach, recognizing that men play a vital role in building strong families. By providing economic opportunities and positive outlets, the project aims to steer young men away from crime and towards a more productive life.
The project’s innovative approach serves as an inspiration for other nations to explore inclusive solutions that go beyond traditional aid programs. By addressing the root causes of social issues and empowering all members of society, Belize and Taiwan are paving the way for a brighter future for generations to come.
