City bus operators voice concerns over e-bus impact in Belize City

Belize City's e-buses a hit despite higher fares and fewer stops

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize City’s new E-Bus pilot project has been met with mixed reactions. While residents, particularly those with disabilities, are enjoying improved and accessible transportation options, traditional city bus operators are expressing concerns about the impact on their livelihoods.

Minister of Transport, Rodwell Ferguson, acknowledged the success of the e-buses but also recognized the concerns of the established bus operators, stating their reaction is a logical response to potential displacement. The bus operators have voiced concerns about the e-buses taking their customers and impacting their bottom line due to the new routes and reduced student fares. They have demanded a share of the profits and restrictions on further expansion of the e-bus routes.

It remains to be seen how the government will address these concerns and find a solution that benefits all stakeholders.

The e-bus project represents a step towards a more modern and accessible public transportation system, but it also highlights the need for careful consideration of the impact on those who may be affected by such changes.
