By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s livestock sector is experiencing a remarkable boom, with its value now approaching $90 million, according to Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai. The industry’s rapid growth, driven by lower input costs and favorable market conditions, has benefited small-scale farmers across the country.
In just one year, from 2022 to 2023, the industry’s value surged by over $30 million, highlighting its potential as a key driver of economic development. The sector now boasts a similar number of farmers as the sugar industry, with 80% operating small farms, ensuring that the benefits are widely distributed.
The Minister emphasized the positive economic impact of the livestock industry compared to the sugar industry, where a huge portion of earnings flows out of the country due to high input costs and interest rates. In contrast, the livestock sector retains a greater percentage of its earnings within Belize, directly benefiting local farmers and communities.
The industry’s success is further evident in its export and domestic performance. In 2023, Belize exported over 30 million pounds of live cattle, generating substantial foreign exchange earnings. Additionally, the local market consumed over 4 million pounds of beef, contributing to food security and local economic activity.
With continued growth and the adoption of advanced technologies, the livestock industry is poised to play an even more significant role in Belize’s economic future. The government’s support and the dedication of farmers are crucial factors in sustaining this positive trajectory.
